Cardiff - a nice milonga with a tacky cowboy

Were there any monuments in Cardiff 20 years ago (except for the most useless castle - made by a rich Welsh so that Cardiff could have one)? Certainly, they have been making a fuss of creating new ones. To start with, they built the huge millennium stadium slapbang in the middle of town. Not happy with that, they bulldozered the port and created a Millennium Cardiff Bay, quite an architectural feat, I shall acknowledge, but, nevertheless, a bit too spiritless. They probably got a few complaints about this and decided to rebuilt a Norwegian Church in the tip of the port and there was where Cardiff's sole milonga was held. Fair to say that the Church was quite Norwegian in a way that it resembled a huge comunal sauna. Have Norwegians not got hold of the air con technology?
Now, tango. To begin with, there have been few times that I was asked £10 for a milonga, except in festivals or balls but that is a different thing; a bit expensive. We were cheerfully received by the organisers and it was quite easy to blend in. The music was nice and audible enough, well structured in tandas and there seemed to be a bunch of very good dancers. Later, I came to know that they were Bristol and Southampton afficionados that just can't get enough of tango. I had some truly nice dances over there and if it weren't for the tropical temperatures they would have been almost perfect!
Then it was time for the moment of the night. Eduardo Villegas (aka El Gaúcho - the cowboy) was going to take the centrepiece. But instead of dancing he showed a tacky show of shoe dancing and one of those circus-like numbers with the strings and balls. He probably should have danced a tango or two (provided he was hired to dance tango, I think, after all he was in a milonga) with whoever was there but he didn't. They must have payed him well, though, because he spent a fortune on hair gel.
The night ended up very well with some nice tangoes. It's an absolute shame that they don't do this event twice per month. The place was packed and this way it is the only proper milonga that Cardiff has per month.
My verdict is that if you are around the area and have time to come to this milonga you should make the effort.

haha! I found the cowboy thing hilarious! Why would they ever do such a thing? Sounds like fun though.
