Tango and Yoga

It's been a while since I am getting that will to try other things that will improve my dance. I don't mean that I want to leave tango, it still grips me as much as it did since the first day I came across it, but I mean that I want to develop my body and mind a little bit more.
I have never tried yoga before, but people that have done tell me that it is a great way of getting to know your inner self and to reach an equilibrium that you rarely do in the "waking life". So tango and yoga sound like the perfect thing.
There is a problem, though. 500 miles. That's the distance that separates my place from Edinburgh. But if you're lucky enough to be in Auld Reeky, give it a try, it's probably going to help your tango a lot!!!

It's definitely good to think about your body. You need it! My embrace is better if I do a few press-ups regularly than it is if I don't.

Yep Mshedgehog, I completely agree with you, phsyical fitness is really important to dance and to get the most out of the body. During the first two years of my tango life I often danced in substandard conditions, with painful knee stoping my progression. When I did 6 months of intensive physiotherapy the difference was unbelievable! I cycle every day to make sure that my leg musculature protects my knee these days! Don't want to go back to the time of dancing 2 months and having to stop other two...

I recently started practicing Yoga here in the US and it has helped tremendously my balance and flexibility during the dance... I couldn't recommend anything better as a complement to Tango!!

I should try yoga then. Anything that helps my tango is welcome!

And pilates... as recommended by our old teachers and a few others I've come across. And any other body conditioning sessions. There are some that are specifically designed to help with tango dancers.

Good tennis players don't just play tennis. Good footballers don't just play football. Good synchronized swimmers don't just do fancy moves subwater. Tennis players go to the gym and do all kinds of exercises to improve their tennis skills. Footballers too and I'm sure those of you reading this would know what kind of things they do to improve their footie skills. Synchronized swimmers do swimming with the competitive swimmers to improve their speed and they also do ballet, aerobics to improve their musicality and co-ordination, and extensive stretches and core work to improve their strength and flexibility.

Therefore, if you want to be a seriously good tango dancer, you can't just dance tango.
