Neotango rant (II)

«The artist creates unconsciously, spontaneously. Pichucho, Di Sarli, De Caro, Salgán and even Piazzolla, created their oeuvre and none of them labeled himself as a vanguardist. They achieved that but were unaware of it. They show what they discovered, what they know, what flows naturally from them and nothing more. This is not avant-garde but a testimony of those that are gifted. The avant-garde is a label. The important musicians composed their oeuvre because they had a sacred fire inside them».

Carlos Garcia (1914-2006), founder and leader of the Orchesta del Tango de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires in Café de Los Maestros

So, as far as I see it, neotango (and not alternative tango) is today's innovation. Just like in the early 1920's tango that De Caro tried to do (the melodical tango that gave rise to the music of Laurenz, Fresedo and Di Sarli). At the time everyone called him mad. Now, everyone calls him a genious.

That was the kind of debate I always had when I was talking to those ultra-conservative-die-hard-classical-music fans. They said that classical music WAS THE MUSIC and they hated pop, R&B, rap, rock and that all these modern stuff are a pile of crap.

So I said to them, well, if you think about it, these so-called classical music was the 'pop'ular music of the time...

During the Romantic Period (in classical music), many traditionalists criticised the music at the time for being out of tempo and too irregular and that it didn't have shape like it did during the Classical and Rennaisance period.

Many art pieces and painters have only become valued now, many years after the artists died...

So true.
But too many people nowadays label music that sounds like salsa and they call it "tango" just because they wanted to.
It happens the same with the dancing.
I see a mix of bussines thing there, and a cultural thing in some cases (specially in usa and uk). This is what i say is tango, i took your tango, and i make it mine, and i do it how i say i think it is (regardless if it actually has anything to do or not with tango)
