Tango semantics

After all, what I have described as Passive Leading, which created a bit of a stir has got other name, Follower's voice. If the semantics haven't worked will the content do?

Perhaps it is the sign of the times that the mere thought of "following" is so distasteful and controversial that we must find other "terms" to make it palatable :-)

The level of distaste for "following" as a term for one half of a dance partnership would make it appear that those who "follow" do so as lifeless zombies.

But if we think about "following orders", "following instructions", "following directions", it is clear that in the "follower" there is great responsibility and contribution to the partnership with the "leader".

I don't think "lead" and "follow" are meant to be exact terms, nor descriptions of each role's many facets; they simply describe two halves of a whole. Where the boundaries of each role meet, there is great cross-pollination.

As you probably know, this entire issue is the topic of my book :-)

Yep Johanna, and I do think we think the same way. Just different words!

;o)

Hi Koolricky;

My guess is that you meant to say the same, but the way most people understand those two concepts is different. The first one has a "bad" connotation to it--close to backleading, which unconsciously bother people (including active tangueras). I would also call it "active following", if you are looking for yet another term :)

La Tanguera, Active following is SO much better than passive leading that I wonder why that haven't crossed my mind before. THANK YOU!
